Reel Snippet – Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles operates under the theory that all comedy is derived from suffering. And it is goddamned hilarious. The sheer amount of misfortune that Steve Martin and John Candy go through just to get to Chicago for Thanksgiving is gut-busting and the magnitude of the misery it makes it more so. But it has its fair share of heartwarming moments that pull the movie’s weight as well. The casting is just perfect from our two main leads to all the odd bit characters. It’s also one of the few movies where the deleted scenes are just as funny as the main content and could have easily been kept in. As it’s one of the few well known Thanksgiving movies out there, it’s a great movie to pop in every Turkey Day, as well as a standing testament to the memory and talent of John Candy and Jon Hughes.
