Reel Snippet – The Cabin in the Woods
The Cabin in the Woods is another one of those films that’s hard to talk about without giving spoilers, but I’ll do my best. Calling it a deconstruction or even a reconstruction of the typical horror/slasher film simply doesn’t do it justice, at least not as to how far they go with it. All of the characters, including the ones that can be called the bad guys, are quite likeable and it’s kind of depressing when one of them is killed off. It’s a Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard film (the latter wrote Cloverfield and The Martian), so of course there’s going to be plenty of levity amidst the terror and drama, some stuff even crossing into territory that’s so absurd you can’t help but laugh at it. That, of course, leads us to the final act of the movie, which I won’t spoil, but trust me when I say that it goes full spleen to the screen in an extremely meta way that many horror aficionados will appreciate.
That’s where I’m going to stop because ruining this movie would earn me in a very special seat in Hell. Suffice to say, if you haven’t seen it already, you owe it to yourself to check it out.
